Andreas Pfeiffer is a diabetes and endocrinology specialist who is involved in studies on the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome and diabetes. He is particularly interested in the mechanisms by which nutrients interact with hormonally regulated metabolic processes. A focus of his current research is the regulation of adipocytokines and insulin sensitivity by pharmacological and nutritional interventions.

Pfeiffer studied medicine in Germany in Kiel and Freiburg and in France in Montpellier. He received his thesis (Dr. med.) from the University of Freiburg. Thereafter he worked about endogenous opioid peptides and their endocrine function at the Max Planck Institute in Munich and at the NIH in Bethesda. In 1992 he was awarded a Hermann and Lilly Schilling Professorship and became University Professor in 1995. He was appointed Chairman of the Dept of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and also head of the Dept. of Clinical Nutrition at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam in 2000.
